Tolangulasana - The Balance

 

Introduction

Tolangulāsana.  Tula तुला: tūlā, scale;  tūlā, balance.  This is the Balance or Scale pose.  Two asanas are grouped under this name: the one presented below and the other, which is a variation of Navasana (series 3) with the legs in lotus.  Other variations of this second type exist.

 

Presentation

This posture involves an intense lateral work of the hinge.

 

Starting Position

The starting position is legs bent on one side. The hands are crossed on the knees.

 

Tolangulasana

 

The eyelids remain open and the eyes fix a real or virtual point in front of the face. Focus initially on energy movement in the spine. During an inhalation, raise the arms above the head, keeping the hands crossed. During the following exhalation, the trunk flexes sideways on the side of the legs. Simultaneously, the eyes rotate upwards seeking to look for a point on the ceiling under the arms, in line with the ceiling.

In that position, the breathing adopts Visamavritti and a powerful Mula Bandha lock is activated. The posture constrains the breathing and one must focus on opening the ribcage and insure that the exhalation is long and slow.

Once comfortable, it is possible to go down even more during an exhalation.

Note: the arms must remain in the same plane as that of the hands which follow the movement to remain constantly above the fontanel.

Remain in the posture for about 3 minutes while attempting to increase the breathing rhythm. Finally, the return starts with an inhalation. The body goes up slowly, the gaze rotates frontward. During the exhalation, the eyelids close and the hands come back to the knees. After the effects are experienced and the breathing came back to normal, effectuate the other side.

At the end, enter the integrating posture.
